Voice Assisted Technology for Gaelic⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

The world’s first Scottish Gaelic Computer Voice is now available from CALL Scotland’s Scottish Voice web site. The new Gaelic computer voice is licensed for the whole of the Scottish public sector, so it can be used by students in schools, colleges and universities, NHS patients, and employees in the public sector.

Ceitidh is available from our Scottish voice website alongside “Heather” and “Stuart”, the two Scottish computer voices.

The Gaelic voice works on Windows and Macintosh computers and can be used to:

  • read Gaelic web sites, ebooks, textbooks, SQA exam papers and other curriculum resources;
  • check writing, emails, and social media posts – listening to what you have typed can help improve your spelling and grammar.

The voice will be particularly helpful for speakers of Gaelic with dyslexia, reading difficulties and visual impairment, but it should also be useful for anyone learning or working in Gaelic.

The development of the voice was funded by the Scottish Government, Scottish Funding Council, SQA and Bòrd na Gàidhlig. The voice has been created by CereProc, the world leading speech Synthesis Company in Edinburgh, working with Michael Bauer of Akerbeltz.

Fly The Flag For Human Rights⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

New campaign to promote the benefits of human rights.

snap

The Scottish Government’s #FlyTheFlag for human rights campaign is part of a contribution to the objectives of Scotland’s National Action Plan for Human Rights, where evidence demonstrates that people are insufficiently aware of their rights and do not feel empowered to claim their rights.

New research carried out by You Gov has shown that one in five Scots believe that human rights are for minority groups only. This new campaign is designed to help people better understand how human rights are relevant, used on a day to day basis and how they help build a fairer and more progressive society.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) – Free event for education professionals⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

FASD

Free Event for Education Professionals

10.00 – 15.00

17 November 2015

COSLA, Edinburgh, 19 Haymarket Yards, Edinburgh, EH12 5BH

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the leading known preventable cause of permanent learning disability worldwide and is caused by maternal use of alcohol during pregnancy. Affected children can have a wide range of physical, growth and neurobehavioural problems which impact on their everyday lives and limit their independence.  Often teachers are the first professional to notice a child has difficulties.

As part of a programme of events over the last 4 years, the Scottish Government has arranged a free event for nursery and primary school teachers. The event’s keynote speaker is Dr Ana Hanlon-Dearman – a Developmental Paediatrician from the Manitoba FASD Centre in Canada. The Scottish Government has worked closely with Dr Hanlon-Dearman in moving FASD forward in Scotland. Dr Hanlon-Dearman has a wealth of experience working with schools in Manitoba, and will be discussing their work supporting children and young people, as well as tools that have proved successful.

For further information or to book a space on the event, please contact Jamie.garden@gov.scot 0131 244 4634.

Solution Oriented Approaches⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

The Rights, Support and Wellbeing Team hope to revise the current guidance and training materials on solution oriented approaches in schools in the coming school session. We hope to update this to reflect the ongoing innovative work that is being implemented in local authorities and will be looking for a number of representatives to support a working group to take this forward.

Included, Engaged and Involved, Part 2 – Update⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

Included, Engaged and Involved, Part 2 is currently being updated. It is hoped that the update will be more streamlined and will focus more heavily on the preventative, staged and early intervention approaches to supporting relationships and behaviour in school whilst continuing to provide clear guidance on some of the key issues around exclusions.

Consultation events on the draft guidance will be held on 13th of January 2016 in Edinburgh and on the 15th of January 2016 in Glasgow with a later date to follow for the North of Scotland. It is also hoped that these days will allow for consultation on the latest anti-bullying guidance which will be in draft form by then.

Nurturing Approaches in Secondary Schools⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

Following the successful launch of ‘Nurturing Approaches in Secondary Schools’ training materials at the Scottish Learning Festival, we have a number of National Training events coming up soon. Part 1, of a 4 Day Training, will be held in Glasgow on the 2nd and 3rd of November and Part 2 will be held in Glasgow on the 23rd and 24th of November.   There will be a second event in Edinburgh with Part 1 being held on the 10th and 11th of November and Part 2 on the 15th and 16th of December. This training will cover all the key modules over a 4 day training period and will enable key staff to deliver it and embed it within a local authority or within their own school. Recommended participants at this training would include: Authority representatives with a key inclusion/support remit; school senior management; nurture teachers and Educational Psychologists. There will be an expectation that attendees with evaluate the impact of the training immediately after and 3 months after attending.

Places can be booked on through the Education Scotland Events Page

A number of local authorities have also embarked on their own bespoke training for Nurture including East Dunbartonshire and North Ayrshire. This can be negotiated as part of an authorities strategic focus with link officers and the RSW Team. There is also ongoing evaluation and support for a number of pilot schools who are taking this initiative forward and we look forward to sharing more on how this has been going, with you in the future.

HIGHLY SKILLED STAFF ARE SECTOR LEADING AT PIRIE PARK PRIMARY⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

P1011795Staff at Pirie Park Primary School, Glasgow are being praised for their sector leading approach to supporting children with additional needs and their approach to responsive learning and teaching.

Practitioners at Pirie Park have developed a broad range of skills and capabilities similar to those of learning support specialists. This development of staff has been recognised as innovative practice by Education Scotland in supporting learners within the school.

Staff use their knowledge of the children and additional support needs (ASN) profiles to help identify learning issues and provide tailored support to children with ASN. This combined with responsive planning and active learning, where tasks, activities and resources interest and motivate children, has led to an exemplary, high quality learning and support environment for learners.

To celebrate their achievements, Pirie Park received a visit from Alan Armstrong, Strategic Director for School Years at Education Scotland. He said:

“It’s fundamental that children and young people have the right support in place to be able to reach their full potential. I am delighted to have met such dedicated and hardworking staff, who are able to provide such tailored and responsive teaching to support children with additional support needs.

“By adopting this approach, staff are able  to help all children achieve in many ways. Responsive learning also plays a big part in developing learners’ skills. It enables the children to recognise the relevance and importance of the skills they’re learning now, and how these will help them in their lives beyond school.  I am very pleased to see this in practice.”

Jane Arthur, Pirie Park Primary Headteacher said: “Last year our school community was delighted to receive such an excellent and positive inspection report that endorsed our work on learning and teaching practices.

“We are committed to making sure that every child in Pirie Park is included, feels valued and receives the targeted support for their individual needs. Our aim is for our children to be happy, confident individuals who will be the best they can be.”

A key feature of the schools highly effective learning and teaching is their investment in practitioners as the core resource. Through classroom practice and professional learning, they have developed skills which mean they can meet the needs of a wide range of children in the classroom.

Following their inspection in June last year, Pirie Park achieved an excellent evaluation for meeting learning needs, and very good evaluations for improvements in performance, learner’s experiences, the curriculum and improvement through self-evaluation. A copy of the Pirie Park Primary School inspection report is available here.
