During the month of August I will be participating in Blaugust, a month long blogging challenge.
Today’s TDC asks:
What’s this book about? And what’s in Chapter 106?
Tell us what you think, and maybe Todd will tell us.
Well, I found the book!

As today is the last day of my holidays I’ve been trying to suck every last minute of my freedom – but the heavy rain this afternoon thwarted my plans for one last walk and confined me to the house. As I mooched around my various social media haunts I remembered that I’d seen a link to sign up for Blaugust 2026, so here’s my intro post. In case you don’t know:
Blaugust is a month-long event that takes place each August which focuses on blogging primarily and has started to include other forms of serialized content over the last several years. The goal is to stoke the fires of creativity and allow bloggers and other content creators to mingle in a shared community while pushing each other to post more regularly. Above all the goal of Blaugust has always been to prove to folks that they can in fact sit down every day and create something fresh and then share it with the world.
Well, I do like a daily challenge – and recently I’ve been blogging some of my Daily Creates here, but sometimes not till a couple of days later and sometimes not at all. So my intention for August 2026 is to complete the TDC each day in a way that I’ll be happy posting it to my blog and sharing it with the Blaugust community – and hopefully some other Ds106ers will also be joining in. If you want to join, the sign up form is here.

Today’s TDC asks us to say what’s in our digital story teller’s kit, so here’s mine:
And a whole load of other stuff: like my light box to draw over images; my pens, pencils and crayons to doodle; my cameras, to take pics as I wander around; my scanner, printer and PC …
Digital storytelling is #4life, and I think the Argos kit for toddlers is great.

Choose art. Choose remix. Choose bricolage. Choose #4life. Choose waking up every morning and wondering what the daily creative challenge will be. Choose ignoring the instructions and doing what you damn well like. Choose looking at Mastodon and marveling over the other remixes. Choose finding quirky websites and submitting them as TDC suggestions. Choose telling all your friends and family about the TDC. Choose doing the TDC even if nobody else does. Choose bricolage. Choose remix. Choose Art. And make art, dammit. #4life

At the 2025 Reclaim Open Conference we ran a session called Why we all love the Daily Create and you should too, and you can watch the full session here
While preparing for the session I reflected on why I loved the TDC so much, and looked back on some of my faves. It didn’t surprise me to realise that it’s the photo editing ones that I like most. Here’s five of them:

I found out about the Daily Create because I became part of an online community. As I’ve written before, in 2014 I signed up for an online experience organised by Dave Cormier called Rhizomatic Learning – The community is the curriculum which I thought was going to be about Deleuze and Guattari, and even though it wasn’t I met a bunch of great people and am still collaborating with some of them in various ways a decade later. I was also introduced to CLMOOC and found many like-minded remixers and bricoleurs there.
As a result of meeting these people, and particularly thanks to my friend Ron Leunissen, I was introduced to #DS106 and the Daily Create. I dipped in and out of participation at first, only responding if a prompt really piqued my interest, but since November 22nd 2017 I have completed the daily challenge every day, without fail. I’ve also written about how important it is to me on a guest reclaim blog post, and I won’t repeat all I said there about the influence that this daily activity has had for me – but it’s a hugely important part of my daily life. Well, after 2894 days of participation it’s not surprising that it’s very much #4life for me.
