Dumfries and Galloway Council Resilience Team⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

In June 2015, Dumfries and Galloway Council resilience team hosted an event in partnership with Moffat Academy to increase the resilience of the community.  Children from the school as well as parents, teachers and members of the community turned out and took part in exercises that would increase their resilience in a range of challenging situations. There were demonstrations from the local Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Mountain Rescue, Police Scotland as well as NHS Dumfries and Galloway.  This could also be a way for schools to engage with the Developing the Young Workforce agenda as it gives an employer an opportunity to engage with a school as well as giving children and young people an opportunity to find out about skills needed for different occupations.

Scotland as the world’s first hydro nation!⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

Recent Scottish Government policy is to develop Scotland as the world’s first Hydro Nation which places more emphasis on water as central to our national identity.

Dissemination of the Hydro Nation Agenda and the benefits of SUDS were delivered to a total of 106 children (ages 3-10) and 14 adults. Based on feedback, the outreach programme to schools was deemed an unquestionable success by the local authority, teachers and school children alike.

This project was a public outreach activity that targeted primary and secondary school children located to the north of Dundee where there are excellent examples of SUDS.

The key objective of the project was to raise awareness of the Hydro Nation agenda with a scope that was twofold: explain the urban water cycle; promote awareness and understanding of the local SUDS and related benefits. In order to work with schools the researchers had to link clearly with Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes focusing on science.
