Developing the Young Workforce – Career Education 3 – 18⤴

Small - DYW IntroThis interactive session will share some news around career education in Scotland. Information about the career education standard will be shared along with some ‎tools to help you and your colleagues explore the standard.

Skills Development Scotland will share the work underway to support learners, teachers and parents/carers. You will be given insight into a successful Career Management Skills project run in Lochardil Primary School, Highlands. The presentation by James Cook comes with a set of materials that describes the aims of the project, provides a 14 week programme outline and evaluative comments. It is worth hearing about!

There will be time for you to ask questions about the presentations as well as the wider Developing the Young Workforce agenda. The session will be presented by Mairi Thomson, Development Officer, Skills 3 – 18 Team Ken Edwards, Education Programme Lead, Skills Development Scotland and James Cook, Depute head teacher, Crown Primary School, Highlands. This session is aimed at head teachers, teachers, employers, parents/carers and anyone one else interested/involved in the development of career education from 3 -18. John Byrne Competition⤴

Small - John Byrne 2015Renowned artist and playwright, John Byrne, invites children and young people in schools across Scotland, from P4 – S3, to participate in the second annual John Byrne National Drawing Competition. John will head the selection panel that will choose the winners, and runners-up, whose work will then be exhibited at Paisley Museum and Art Gallery. All exhibitors will meet John himself at a prestigious exhibition opening at the gallery in March 2016.

Schools are invited to tune in on Friday 4th December at 10.45am to find out about John’s work, drawing in particular, and why he wants to keep on learning! Children and young people participating in the Glow TV session will have a chance to ask John questions about his life and work.

Inspired by John’s love of drawing, and his desire to get children drawing more often, the aim of the competition is to develop children and young people’s imagination and creativity to represent the world around them. Interfaith Scotland⤴

Small - Interfaith ScotlandFrances Hume, Development Officer at Interfaith Scotland and Jamie Spurway, Interfaith Scotland’s Religious Equality Officer will share about interfaith dialogue – what it is, why it is important, and the work that Interfaith Scotland is engaged in locally and nationally. They will give an outline of Interfaith Scotland’s schools programmes and the resources that Interfaith Scotland can offer to classroom teachers.

This Glow TV event on Monday 23rd November at 3.45pm is being aired during Scottish Interfaith Week where over 60 events are taking place across Scotland to bring people of all faiths and none together in their local communities. The theme of Scottish Interfaith Week this year is ‘Care for the Environment’ and Frances and Jamie will outline resources available for teachers on this theme and give an overview of interfaith week activities.

Trans Awareness: raising awareness and understanding⤴

Small - TransgenderThis Glow TV Event aims to raise awareness and understanding of issues relevant to trans-inclusivity within educational contexts with some time being dedicated to a Q and A to allow for any questions regarding trans to be answered.

The session on Monday 23rd November at 1.30pm will be co-facilitated by Sara Turkington, Equality and Inclusion Officer at Ayrshire College and Oceana Maund, a trans woman and Scottish Transgender Alliance (STA) volunteer. Aims of the session: · Raise awareness and understanding of issues relevant to trans-inclusivity within educational contexts. Target audience: Teaching and Service staff

Over 1300 years ago, the Vikings emerged from their homelands in modern-day Scandinavia as a force to be reckoned with. For around 300 years, they gained a reputation at home and abroad as fearsome warriors and ruthless explorers. But the Vikings were also skilled farmers, traders, sailors and craftspeople.
