Technologies at Work – Real life, Real Time⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

27 January 2016- 2:30pm

In March last year Education Scotland published ‘Building Society: Young people’s experiences and outcomes in the technologies’.   This impact review recognised how important this area of the curriculum is in preparing young people for the world of work. Technologies at work is a series of Glow meets that will allow young people to interact with people who have made a career through working in a range of different industries.

Each month we will record and share links to interview/conversations with real people working in technology related industries. These films will be there for you to watch in the ‘Watch Again’ area of Glow TV/broadcasting. You can watch these at a time and place that is appropriate for you and your learners. You will then be able to login at a later date (which will normally be between 2 and 4 weeks after the recordings have gone live on Watch Again)for a live glow TV session where you and your learners can ask the interviewee any questions.

Join the team at Education Scotland for what should be an interesting and informative discussion with Dr Pamela Anderson who works in the aero-space industry in Glasgow. Pamela has already recorded some background information and this is available at

https://meet.glowscotland.org.uk/p54og7shnkb/

It is anticipated that the Glow Meet session will build on what has already been recorded and will focus on

  • Career pathways
  • The importance of technologies in the workplace
  • Scotland and the aero-space industry

The session will be relevant for practitioners and young people working in the senior phase. Please sign up for the Glow Meet by following the link below.

Introduction to Circular Design and Manufacturing for Textile and Apparel Industry⤴

from @ Education Scotland's Learning Blog

Mark Shayler and Dr Jen Ballie will deliver an ‘Introduction to Circular Design and Manufacturing for Textile and Apparel Industry’ ( Accredited by the Textile Institute)

Monday 15th February 0930 – 17.00 ( full-day)

Monday 15th February 18.00 -2000 ( evening lecture)

Venue: University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College of Art

This masterclass is most suitable for those working in the textile and apparel sector in commerce, academia or education and would like a formal introduction to how circular economy principles can be applied to business models within the textile and apparel design and manufacturing processes. It will not include one to one consultation on individual businesses but will provide resources and references points for attendees to follow up. It would equally suit attendees interested in the Textile Institute accreditation who may already have strong knowledge in this field.

More details will be published shortly and if you would like to be informed of when the application process opens next week please register your interest with Suzanne Nelson at – nelson@mabbett.eu

Over the past eight years NVA has been leading ambitious proposals to reclaim the future of the world-renowned, Grade A Listed St Peter’s Seminary complex and its surrounding Victorian-designed landscape near Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute. The primary aim is to establish a place for communities from across Scotland and further afield to engage with high quality public art, heritage and performance by creating a new and exciting cultural resource that aims to be open to the public and be fully operational in 2018.  The heritage site, landscape and the future public programme of heritage, learning and cultural activities offer a variety of opportunities for schools in the coming years.

The new resource will offer great potential for a wide variety of formal and informal learning for a variety of age groups. The wealth of thematic areas presents opportunities for study in a range of subjects, including social history, the natural environment, architecture and construction.

In March 2016, Hinterland (St Peter’s Seminary and its surrounding Kilmahew estate) will launch Scotland’s Festival of Architecture, presenting a key highlight to the Scottish Government’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.  From 18 – 27 March, Hinterland will reveal the full glory of the towering concrete ruin, combining moving light installations and projection with a haunting choral soundscape.
