Beith Languages Hub Website⤴

from

By Amy Guidi           Beith Primary School            North Ayrshire

I have used a Glow Blog to create a 1+2 Languages web site.

This site has been created to support and facilitate Spanish language learning. Pupils have been writing scripts and recording themselves. These have been published on the website as podcasts. Each podcast included relevant links to websites that can challenge and support the listeners further. Pupils have been responsible for every stage of the podcast process.

I received support from a colleague in Braehead Primary School, in Stirling council and I attended a training session with our local Glow coordinator on the use of Glow blogs and how to customize the site.

I have been working with pupils on this project since mid May 2015 and we have four podcasts available for pupils, parents and staff.

This has had a very positive impact on pupils as they enjoy listening to their peers and are challenged to produce the next podcast for the site. Staff and parents are able to improve and practice their Spanish which has been vitally important in providing people with the necessary supports when introducing a new language across the school.beith 2

Staff have a starting point for Spanish lessons and links to tried and tested website, songs and apps. This has boosted their confidence in delivering Spanish lessons.

This is an ongoing project and I will continue to support learners to produce podcasts on a regular basis. All topics that are taught in class will be covered in podcasts. We hope to include movie clips next session.

The website is available to everyone at

Digital Leaders and Glow tools at St Bernadette’s RC Primary⤴

from

John Cloherty, P6/7 teacher and ICT Coordinator at St Bernadette’s RC Primary, Falkirk and the P7 Digital Leaders Niamh Wallace and Molly Rodden explain how they have been using the Glow tools in their school.

stBs1

St Bernadette’s Primary has 8 classes and a Digital Leader was assigned to each class. They are responsible for trouble-shooting and teaching classes through a skills based approach. There is a poster with a hotline number in each class! Staff and pupils then provide feedback about this approach.

During Digital Learning Week, the Digital Leaders were responsible for organising the week, including writing lesson plans for teaching each class. These had to include success criteria and learning intentions.

Initial training was recieved from Malcolm Wilson at Falkirk Council

Impact

The Digital Leaders are responsible for the school blog for their assigned class. Staff use their Glow email to send them pictures and information for inclusion in the blog. This has encouraged other classes to make better use of the tools and to actively seek new ways to use technology with learners. It has also encourage staff to listen to learners and to use their expertise.

The opportunities for collaborative work has been increased. Learners have been able to work together on PowerPoint, each taking responsibility for a different slide.stbs3

During Digital Learning Week, they took part in the collaborative story telling which allowed them to write part of a National story.

The learning has been more pupil led and has allowed personalisation and choice, linked to pupil interests. This ensures learners have ownership of the learning and more confidence, especially when teaching staff. The learners would recommend this approach as it helps to make learning fun. It has also helped consolidate their learning as they can’t forget how to do things when they are sharing with others. They have also learned it is important to be patient and enthusiasm is essential!

Future Use

The Digital Leaders programme will continue into next session and they are busy training the new leaders. It is hoped the Digital Leaders will continue training staff during collegiate times, pupils during class time and introduce some Parent sessions. They also have plans to use Glow Meet for a school TV channel.

Holyrood Secondary – Glow Literacy Site by K Barrowman⤴

from

Holyrood Secondary School, Govanhill, Glasgow

In Holyrood Secondary school we have used the office 365 Glow sites, incorporating tools such as the Newsfeed, surveys, document stores and embedded media with our S1 and S2 pupils (800 children in total).

The site has lots of literacy based activities and links. There are standing activities, such as a reading club, links to external competitions, and a place to share writing. There is also a weekly challenge, with three activities based around a theme, each of which allows pupils to practice their literacy skills and share the results. An added bonus is that using the site ties in with the school’s rewards programme for S1 and S2 pupils, the Holyrood Challenge, and pupils can earn points for contributing to the site.

2

The Initial set-up of the site took about 4 hours, over a few days, and it takes around an hour each week to archive the previous week’s challenge, collate the points to be awarded, and set up the new challenges.

The impact has been increased learner engagement outside of school. All of the young people who engage with the site are doing so out of choice, and it has fostered a sense of community across classes and year groups. It has been an opportunity for wider achievement, and a really fun way of getting to know kids not in my classes.

3

Pupils are now aware of Glow, and what it can be used for. The maths department have set up a Numeracy group, and other departments are interested in getting involved. There is a greater willingness among staff and pupils to use online tools for learning. It has also offered a ‘safe’ environment for publishing and celebrating work, which some learners prefer to publishing on a public facing website.

I have now moved on from the school, but I will be working with one of the teachers to take over the running of the site for next session. I hope it will go from strength to strength!

RM Books ebooks system – Case Study – Harris Academy Dundee⤴

from

Watch how Harris Academy Dundee engage students by working on top of electronic textbooks using RM Books Book Notes overlays.

Teachers add audio, video, links, text and discussion overlays to fully engage their students in their work. Students look up words using the dictionary, highlight key text for revision, make their own notes and reply to teachers’ discussions, all within the books.

Easy single-sign-on to RM Books via Glow enables students to quickly access their books at home and at school, on computers or via their own phones and devices.

Glow Meets with Bathgate Early Years Centre⤴

Making good use of Glow at Bathgate Early Years Centre.

At Bathgate Early Years Centre we use Glow to develop and extend children’s learning through participating in Glow TV events and hosting Glow meets and events of our own in the Early Years Meeting Room (West Lothian Council) . Our families also tell us they find our Glow blog is an effective means of communication and sharing information with them.

 Transition to P1 Glow meets.

Bathgate Early Years centre is associated with many different schools within the area. Meeting with children and staff from other establishments online enables us to build strong links with our associated schools. This gives our nursery children opportunities to chat to the Primary 1 teachers and pupils, many of whom they remember from the previous year at nursery. It is good practice to have a discussion with the nursery children beforehand to find out what interests them about moving on to school. This information can then be emailed to the P1 teacher in advance of the Glow meet to allow the P1’s to prepare their answers.

Glow meets provide a great opportunity to have ‘all together’ story and song times with P1’s in associated schools, particularly when it can be difficult to travel between establishments. They are also a good way of participating in special events, e.g. watching Nativity performances/ concerts/ assemblies.

Collegiate Glow meets.

Arranging to meet a colleague from other establishments or departments in a Glow meet is a useful means of communication and also saves on travelling time. The Glow meeting room has the facility of allowing you to ‘share your screen’. This has been a particularly helpful resource when faced with technical issues as the I.T. professional can easily guide you through them.

Sharing our learning Glow meets.

Another way in which we can use the Early Years meeting space on Glow is to share our learning with other establishments. When the nursery within our centre had chicks in an incubator, a web cam was set up to watch the every move of the chicks hatching. An email was sent to head teachers in West Lothian, inviting them to share the meeting room link with their staff so pupils from other establishments could also be part of this special learning experience.

Glow TV Events.

Children at Bathgate Early Years Centre are keen to take part in the exciting events on Glow TV. Previously we have enjoyed tuning into ‘World Book Day’ events and ‘Meet the Author’ events.

More recently we learned about dinosaurs when we took part in National Museums Scotland’ ‘Dinosaur Discoveries’ Glow TV event and also chatted to an astronaut about his experience as commander of the International Space Station!

Early Years Centre Blog.

In addition to updating our centres blog with newsletters and policy information our parents/carers and families enjoy regular updates on the children’s learning and interests in nursery. After consultation with parents, they agreed it would be helpful to understand what the children were learning from the activities and opportunities on offer and can now access Curriculum for Excellence outcomes on each post.
