St Mary’s Primary School (North Ayrshire): Work-based learning opportunities through community partnerships⤴

St Mary’s Primary School, finalist at the Scottish Education Awards 2017, has developed a systematic approach to career education weaving work-based learning opportunities across the curriculum.  This includes an assisted work placement programme for all P7 students with local business across a wide range of sectors from science and technology, IT and the hospitality sector.    The programme is now running in its second year.   Headteacher Mary Hume says:  “We have built excellent relationships within the town evidenced by the fact that they are willing to work with our pupils again this year but moreover, we have been able to diversify and offer more choice to our pupils.”

One of their partnerships allows pupils to shadow interpreters at Conentrix (IBM) dealing with complex issues of cyber security.  The partnership also extents to staff visiting the school to supporting the 1+2 languages agenda at St Mary’s.

This initiative sits within the wider career education programme the school offers all learners across the curriculum.  Parents and employers are co-designing and delivering exciting project work that enhances leanrers’s skills for learning, life and work.

Maisondieu Primary School (Angus): Opening horizons and challenging stereotypes through career education⤴

Rising to the challenge set by the Career Education Standard 3-18, Maisondieu Primary School has woven career education and advice into their curriculum from early years to P7.   Working oin partnerhsup with parents and the wider community the school harnesses a wider range of resources and support including SDS’s online materials to develop skills and career aspirations for the 21 century.  A working group, led by a parent-teacher partnership and local community partners, helped to promote the schools career education .  Many activities including a ‘World of Work Mobile Unit’ and two whole school careers events were arranged. These enable children and young people to actively engage with variety of employers to support learning and understand the skills required for  their future pathways.

The impact of this approach is far-reaching:

  • Pupils are able to connect their learning with the world of work, carefully selected representatives from local employers help challenge stereotypes and provide a more realistic picture of jobs and careers available for young people in the future and the skills required to access these.
  • It also strengthened partnership links with stakeholders in the community.
  • It allowed pupils and staff to reflect upon the entitlements and expectations set out within the Career Education Standard 3-18

Are you Awards Aware?⤴

The Awards Network’s Awards Aware Scheme and new website will be formally launched by Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP, Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science at an event to be held at Leith Academy on 31 August 2017. Being Awards Aware demonstrates a commitment to recognise and value the skills and achievements gained by young people through youth awards.

The Awards Network website provides information on non-formal learning awards and programmes from (currently) 26 member organisations, highlighting learning outcomes and impact. Adding to learner journey options are credit-rated awards such as Youth Scotland’s Youth Achievement Awards, YouthLink Scotland’s Participative Democracy Certificate and SQA Employability Awards; programme awards, including the John Muir Award, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Queen’s Scout Award; participation and nominated awards such as the Saltire Award and Young Scot Awards.

IET: Engineering Work Experience for All⤴

The  Institute for Engineering and Technology (ITE) has launched a campaign entitled ‘Engineering Work Experience for All’  in order to raise awareness of the value of high quality, practical work placements in helping to develop future engineers with the practical skills they need for the workplace.

According to the IET 2016 Skills and Demand in Industry report, 62 per cent of engineering employers say graduates don’t have the right skills for today’s workplace, while 68 per cent are concerned that the education system will struggle to keep up with the skills required for technological change. To address these growing concerns over skills gaps in the engineering workforce, particularly among graduates and school leavers, 91 per cent of companies agreed that more employers need to provide work experience for those in education or training.

The campaign

In response to these statistics, the IET has launched the Engineering Work Experience for All campaign to champion the need for more employers and universities to collaborate to offer quality work experience to engineering students. The campaign is designed to rally employers, universities, Government and students to make a range of different, quality work experience opportunities more widespread.

Skills Scotland Events 2017⤴

The Skills Scotland events are held in three key locations – Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow  aiming to close the gap between the workplace and the classroom by linking industry with education.

Connecting young people with careers, jobs, skills and apprenticeship opportunities, Skills Scotland is aimed at students aged S4 and above.
In each region schools, colleges, youth and community groups are
invited to attend with free entry for students and teachers with
access to a travel bursary fund. All events are also open to parents
and carers with a dedicated evening opening session in Glasgow.
Skills Scotland offers an immediate way for industry to influence and
educate the next generation of talent, supporting recommendations
from the Wood report and offering solutions to issues such as youth
unemployment and the growing industry skills gaps.
Across the series over 170 educational establishments will meet with
in excess of 120 exhibitors to learn about recruitment, learning and
training opportunities. Each show is a one stop shop for young
people to discover what’s next and meet with a variety of exhibitors
face to face including regional and national employers, colleges and
universities plus training providers and other career or sector specific organisations.

Developing essential employability skills through outdoor education⤴

Exposing young people to the outdoors and engaging them in activities that challenge and inspire them has long been highlighted as an important component to support the development of skills for learning, life and work.  Resilience , team building, problem-solving as well as acquiring technical skills  all help when it come to preparing for the world of work.

This has been highlighted by the recent visit of Jamie Hepburn, Scottish Minister for Employability and Training,  to The Outward Bound Trust’s Loch Eil Centre to see for himself how the trust works with young people to help them develop skills which enable them to become workplace-ready.   In his interview to the Scotsman (7 July) he said: “It was fantastic to see The Outward Bound Trust’s work helping young people build their skills and confidence while enjoying the outdoors. This kind of practical training is benefitting Scotland’s workforce and enabling our economy to grow and flourish. That is why we are investing in 30,000 modern apprenticeship starts per year by 2020 and are increasing the number of graduate level and foundation apprenticeships.”

The trust has recently placed even more emphasis on the transition from education to the workplace and to tailoring our offerings to respond to the Developing the Young Workforce agenda. We work with employers to design, develop and deliver courses that address specific workplace needs, such as positive attitudes, communication skills and determination to stay motivated when faced with difficult situations.

Outward Bound Interesting Practice exemplar

IMPACT OF GLASGOW’S PIONEERING MENTORING PROJECT PUBLISHED⤴

For the last few years, Glasgow City Council and MCR Pathways have nurtured and extended a pioneering and highly successful mentoring and talent development programme for disadvantaged and care experienced young people across a number of the city’s secondary schools.

More than 600 young people are now supported in their schools by mentors from all walks of life and all ages. Powerful statistics published in the 2017 Impact Report on Thursday 13  July, reveals that more secondary pupils than ever before are achieving better results in literacy and numeracy and staying on rates in this group of young people is at an all-time high. Critically, reversing decades of poor national outcomes for young people in the care system, record numbers of Glasgow’s young people are progressing directly to college, university and employment.

Maureen McKenna, Executive Director of Education is delighted with the progress of the programme and said today: “Quite simply – working with MCR Pathways has had an incredible impact on the positive destinations of the young people who’ve been mentored. Three years ago only 48.8% of our most disadvantaged young people in the city went on to positive destinations on leaving school – to either a job, college or university – this has now jumped to an amazing 81%.

“This is great news for our young people, the city and its organisations, our school staff and of course the mentors.”

Relationship mentoring in Glasgow schools is undoubtedly closing the attainment gap in the city and helping some of our most vulnerable pupils.

As Iain MacRitchie, Founder of MCR Pathways, explains: “Above all else, our project is about the young people and the potential we can all help realise in everyone who becomes a part of the MCR Pathway family.

“The Impact Report is all about the young people’s success stories, the fact and figures, the achievements, case studies, commitments and our bold plans for the future as we look to celebrate 10 amazing years of mentoring and talent development in Glasgow. We are very determined to bridge the talent of all our young people with the many opportunities our great city has to offer. MCR mentoring is the bridge”

What stands out in the report is the comments from the young people, the mentors, families and school staff. Every participant benefits and the longer the programme runs in each school the

greater the impact. St Andrew’s Secondary, where MCR Pathways first started in 2007, best illustrates the extent where 100% of mentored young people progressed to college, university or employment in contrast to a starting position of 31%. From a qualifications perspective those with 5 or more subjects at level 4 or better, St Andrews was 91% compared to Glasgow at 60% and nationally of 54%. For all those on the MCR Pathways programme across the 10 schools analysed it was 88%.

The project is making a huge difference to the lives of so many who were in need or just coping – and now supporting more than 600 young people across the city. The plan being developed is to more than double this number in 2 years.

But it’s also about making a difference in the lives of the mentors – you just need to read their comments to see what becoming a mentor has meant to them and benefitted them in ways that they had not thought possible.

MCR Pathways is currently operating in 15 secondary schools and working on a plan to extend into all 30 as well as set a powerful national precedent. The partnership between Glasgow City Council and MCR is pioneering and has a simple target to mentor every care experienced and disadvantaged young person across the city. This means building the capacity and number of mentors to ultimately support 1500 young people.

Earlier this year, Glasgow City Council also announced an ambitious target – to engage up to 10% of council employees as mentors or as part of the talent taster programme.

As Iain MacRitchie concludes: “When one mentors, two lives are changed. Organisations are also benefitting hugely with staff skills being enriched and developed in profound ways. People really do make Glasgow and the commitment from individuals is inspired and inspiring. An increasing number of Glasgow’s organisations are signing up to encourage and support their staff to mentor as part of their working week. It is a privilege to work with so many people so determined to help young people realise their full potential and be defined by their talent and never their circumstances.

“As well as mentoring, our Talent Taster Programme is expanding and already revolutionising work experience for individuals and organisations alike. We have a number of very significant and exciting plans coming to fruition, many of which will be announced after the summer”

DYW Interesting Practice- Ellon Academy: ‘Work-related Learning’ offer enhance pupils’ employability skills⤴

In response to the new Work Placements Standard, Ellon Academy has introduce their ‘Work-related Learning’ model  in collaboration with local business and employers offered as an option choice for all pupils in the senior phase.   Leaners are given the opportunity to   participate in  internship-style work placements one day a week from August to Easter and are able to select from a wide range of  sectors including journalism, education, hospitality, performing arts, event management child care.  Supplementary lessons in school allow participants to reflect on their   learning experience, enhance newly developed skills and at the same time gain a National Progression Award in Enterprise and Employability at level 4 or 5.

DYW Interesting Practice – Dalgety Bay Primary School: The Career Education Standard at the heart of school planning⤴

Laura Spence  , HT at Dalgety Bay Primary School has adopted a unique approach to ensure that career education is an integral part of the school improvement planning.  Embracing  the Career Education Standard 3-18  all staff have used Learning Resource 1:  Introduction to the Career Education Standard in order to embed the entitlements into the learning and teaching across the school.

This approach has become a cluster model and has been recognised by  and share across Fife Council .

The school’s vision of realising their ambitions to provide all children with opportunities to connect leanring with the world of work include the following actions :

  • Teachers will provide creative opportunities to develop the skills for life in meaningful and relevant contexts within their class.
  • All teacher will deliver 4D learning intentions, consistently linking each lesson to career education.
  • Our weekly assemblies will regularly include information on specific careers, making children aware of the range of employment opportunities on offer.
  • Children  from P5 onwards will have access to the ‘My World of Work’ website where they will have the opportunity to explore different career options focusing on skills and qualifications.
  • Classroom displays and planning will include links to Career Education throughout the school.
  • We will continue to engage with local business partners and beyond to develop contacts and create a database of professionals prepared to support the school in developing Career Education within school.
  • We will be planning and organising a Career Education Day that will take place on 22nd November 2016.

DYW Interesting Practice – Larbert High School: Developing young peoples’ skills across all aspects of learning⤴

Developing learners’ skills is high on the agenda at Larbert High School.  The leadership team have adopted a systematic approach to enhancing young peoples’ skills for life and work and implemented a holistic ‘Skills Framework’ across all aspects of the curriculum.  The school uses the DYW context to offer learners a wide variety of experience and  pathways in order to ensure all young people are developing the necessary skills and aptitudes for a positive vision about the futures.  Collaboration with both the wider community and employers is elementary to the successful realisation of this goal.

The ‘Skills Framework at Larbert High School complements this agenda and ensures that all young peoples know, understand and are able to articulate  their skill sets and are able to relate these to their  career aspirations.     The following document outlines the Skills Framework:
