Making Scotland a STEM Nation⤴

STEM Education and Training Strategy for Scotland has now been published

A STEM (Sciences Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics) Education and Training Strategy was launched in the Scottish Parliament last week by Ms Shirley-Anne Somerville, Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science. The Strategy, together with a STEM Evidence Base Report, is now available to download from: http://www.gov.scot/Publications/2017/10/1386/downloads

A central focus on the strategy is to enable everyone to develop STEM skills for learning, for life and for work. It provides a new emphasis on career pathways within STEM sectors and to grow successful  partnerships between schools and employers through the Developing the Young Workforce Programme.  The strategy also includes a commitment to expand Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeship Programmes to enable many to pursue jobs and careers in STEM through these pathways. This strong focus on skills and careers will further enhance national efforts to Develop the Young Workforce (DYW) and embed employment and career management skills in the curriculum through the Career Education Standard.

Sleep in the Park: 1000 Free School Tickets!⤴

This year Social Bite are bringing together 9,000 people in Princes Street Gardens, on the 9th of December, for the world’s largest ever Sleep-Out to try and end homelessness in Scotland for good. Participants will be joined by some of the world’s biggest artists to sleep in the cold for one night.
We have invited some amazing musicians to “busk” stripped back acoustics sets including Liam Gallagher, Deacon Blue, Amy Macdonald and Frightened Rabbit. We also have Rob Brydon hosting the event, Sir Bob Geldof sleeping out and John Cleese has agreed to come and read a bedtime story!

Please note:  This allocation is for young people 16 and over and they must be accompanied by an adult.

Opportunity for Your School

Ordinarily, in order to participate in the event people have to pay an initial donation of £50 and commit to raise at least £50 more. However, we have had a wealthy individual donate £50,000 to fund the participation of 1,000 School kids (aged 16 and over).

Therefore I am writing to see if you would like to take an allocation of free tickets for children over 16 at your school. The group would need to commit to raising a minimum of £50 or more per person in order to take part, but would not have to pay any initial £50 registration fee as this has been entirely funded. They would also have to be accompanied to the event by a teacher(s).

We are giving the school ticket allocations out on a first come first served basis and we expect the demand to be high and the 1,000 available to be taken quickly. Therefore could you let me know if you would like an allocation of tickets? If so please let me know the number of tickets you would like for your school?

Calderglen High School – top for positive leavers’ destination in South Lanarkshire⤴

How Insight supports DYW⤴

Insight assists secondary schools and local authorities in identifying where improvements can be made in the senior phase as well as areas of success and best practice. It supports professional dialogue about performance at whole school, curriculum area and subject level as part of the improvement process to raise attainment and improve post-school participation in employment, further and higher education. Insight went live in September 2014 but did you realise that discussions are ongoing with awards providers with a view to expanding the range of qualifications in Insight, including, most importantly, those that support vocational learning. Qualifications must be credit-rated on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, and aligned with the principles of Curriculum for Excellence.
Insight already includes attainment data on a range of qualifications related to vocational education. These include National Certificates, Higher National Qualifications, Scottish Vocational Qualifications, National Progression Awards and Skills for Work qualifications. From September 2016 there will be additional useful updates:

  •  some increases in the tariff points allocated to some specific work-related courses. Some courses attract ‘added value’ – i.e., where there is deemed to be value to the learner over and above the sum of the award’s constituent components – which might be units or courses. This might be either because they contain an exam unit, an identified ‘added value unit’ (e.g. National 4) or because the award provider has made a case to the Insight project board that the course delivers added value in another way.
  • added value’ recognition will be extended to National Certificates; National Progression Awards; and Scottish Vocational Qualifications. Skills for Work already had this recognition.
  • remember, Insight captures detail of awards gained by learners at establishments other than their base centre and these are included within the tariff-based benchmarking measures. From September a new ‘partnership attainment’ measure to make data on the learning achieved by young people in colleges or other training providers, as part of a senior phase vocational pathway, will be more visible and convenient for users to access.

There is more:
• the new Foundation Apprenticeships will also be awarded added-value from the first certifications in summer 2018. As Foundation Apprenticeships will vary in SCQF credit points, the Insight tariff points for any particular framework will also vary depend on its characteristics.
• a full review of the tariff principles (building on the annual health-checks) will be launched shortly. The review will consider whether any adjustments may be necessary to the tariff scale within Insight going forward, to ensure it is fulfilling its original objectives. Keep your eyes open, we want to encourage as many responses as possible. The survey won’t take long.

Interesting practice exemplar: St Andrew’s Academy – weaving employability into the senior phase curriculum⤴

St Andrew’s RC Secondary School in Glasgow has adopted an innovative approach to their senior phase curriculum design which includes an employability stand  alongside a two year Higher and traditional pathway model from S4 to S6.

The following document and presentation sets out the importance of this particular design feature, the challenges the school faced and the lessons they are learning from the ongoing evaluations of their curriculum design. Evidence about success of the design focuses on improved outcomes for young people.

Also noteworthy is the radical curriculum design at Craigroyston Community High School which unapologetically focuses on learner destination only. STEM Programme to be brought to over 200 Kinross Pupils⤴

More than 200 pupils at Kinross High School will now have the chance to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) thanks to the support of WSP.

The global professional services consultancy which originally sponsored 25 pupils to take part in the Design, Engineer Construct!® (DEC) programme in 2016, has extended its funding of the project for 2017 so that more pupils can learn about STEM subjects.

Kinross High School is one of the first schools in Scotland to roll out the accredited programme and registered on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

The DEC programme at Kinross High School includes both theoretical and practical activities including lessons on the roles available within the construction industry and how a project goes from feasibility to construction.

Practical activities include site lessons on land surveying and how to use Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to create dimensional models of their own building designs.

Sarah Piscitelli, senior engineer at WSP, said: “We’re really excited to help bring the Design, Engineer Construct! Programme to even more pupils at Kinross High School this year.

“The feedback from last year’s programme has been excellent so we were keen to help extend this to allow more pupils to learn about engineering and the exciting career opportunities that can exist within this industry.

“We’re proud that Kinross will be one of the first high schools in Scotland to take the programme to this level and hope that more schools will get the chance to do this in the future.”

Richard Smith, design and technology teacher at Kinross High School said: “The pilot course that we ran, with the support of WSP, has been a huge success and we are delighted that this will now be extended to over 200 pupils across the school.

“It’s great to know that there is such a thirst from the pupils for these subjects and we hope that it will encourage more children to go on and study it further either at college or university or go on to pursue a career in the industry.”

Alison Watson, chief executive of Class Of Your Own Limited, the social business behind  Design, Engineer Construct!, said:  “The uptake of DEC in Scotland has been really exciting. Kinross High is a school with high aspirations for its young people, and the confidence and creativity simply oozes out of these children. It just shows what can be achieved with a great teacher and great industry support. These children will have an exceptional start to their working lives – just what Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce is all about.”

Projects undertaken by WSP in Scotland include the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, the Edinburgh Gateway Interchange and Glasgow 2014 Athlete’s village in Dalmarnock.

Amazing Things – the guide to youth awards⤴

The 4th edition of Amazing Things – the guide to youth awards in Scotland has been launched by the Awards Network to coincide with the 2017 Scottish Learning Festival. Featuring 26 youth award providers and more than double the number of youth awards than the previous edition, it is packed with information that will help young people, educators and employers to learn more about youth awards and how they contribute to young people’s learning, life and work skills development.

Commenting on Amazing Things, Graeme Logan, Chief Inspector of Education, encourages ‘everyone who works with young people – in schools, youth work settings, further education or in the workplace to make best use of this excellent resource’.
In his Foreword to Amazing Things, John Swinney MSP, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, highlights the important contribution that youth awards make to raising attainment and to developing key skills valued by employers. Hugh Aitken CBE, CBI Scotland Director, echoes these remarks, commending youth awards for helping young people develop a ‘can do attitude – exactly what we (employers) want to see in the workforce’.
A keynote contribution from Jim Thewliss, General Secretary of School Leaders Scotland, notes how youth awards have developed ‘from curriculum enhancements to fundamental building blocks’.
And from young people themselves:

Developing the Young Workforce : Marketplace

I am seconded to Scottish Government to support the Developing the Young Workforce strategy and the regional employer groups that have been set up to deliver employer engagement with young people in education to help their awareness and access to the world of work.

This is the second time I have had this privilege having been involved in Determined to Succeed and people have asked me what is different this time round. I think one area for change is how we use digital technology to communicate employer offers and support to education.

Last year, the Edinburgh, East and Mid-Lothian DYW group launched Marketplace which is a digital platform for employers to offer schools insight, inspiration and awareness activities and events. The National DYW group led by Rob Woodward of STV has since agreed to the roll-out of Marketplace as the recommended tool for DYW groups to use.

Skills Development Scotland in collaboration with Scottish Government, Education Scotland, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayrshire, and North East DYW groups have led the development of Marketplace.

The benefits of Marketplace are to make it easy for employers to communicate an offer to education and, for teachers it sits on My World of Work website which will make it easier to search for opportunities. The system allows teachers to book employer offers and will be open for young people to be able to see what’s on offer too

In addition, the Founders4schools service is available in Marketplace and this links teachers with entrepreneurial employers who wish to offer learning opportunities to schools. So the platform allows you to see what’s already available and to build your own event with employer support if you require this.

Equality & Inclusion: Good practice exemplars⤴

The following four good practice exemplars have been published on the National Improvement Hub to highlight initiatives that help learners requiring additional support to develop skills and find employment.

Exemplar 1: Enable Scotland’s ‘Stepping Up’ programme

This innovative employability programme offers comprehensive support for young people aged 14 to 19 who have learning disabilities which takes participants from an initial investigation of the world of work, through a process of discovery and planning for their future, to engagement with employers in real workplace settings. Exemplar 2: ‘Thinking Digitally’ – a new resource

This credit rate module by Lead Scotland allows candidates to develop relevant digital skills and build confidence operating in online environments.  More on this here.

Exemplar 3:  ‘TOPs’ – training opportunities for young parents

This programme run by Rathbone Training, a UK-wide voluntary youth sector organisation which supports young people aged 16 to 24 who have disengaged from society, aims to help young parents in their personal development. More here.

This is a course created by the charity Lead Scotland so that more people can learn how to influence change and make a difference within their communities. More information here.
