Material World is a resource that has been developed for secondary schools, designed to use textiles as a medium for delivering learning outcomes related to the STEM, Circular Economy & Sustainability and Developing the Young Workforce agendas. The resource uses case studies of Scottish textile, leather and fashion companies to provide young people with a deeper understanding of the processes used, and products made in Scotland today. Themed activities are linked to the case studies to deepen their learning and skills analysis sheets link the learning through activities, to jobs in the sector.
This newly developed standard provides direction and exemplification across a range of sectors in order to build on and enhance work-based learning experiences for college students in Scotland. Realising the new standard will support the development of learners’ employability skills and subsequently improve the career prospects of all students studying in colleges across Scotland.
The new document complements the Work Placements Standard for Schools released in September 2015 and articulates well with its key messages, allowing practitioners in secondary schools to align work placements for diverse learner pathways in the senior phase.
The first six ‘DYW interesting practice’ exemplars have now been published on Education Scotland’s National Improvement Hub, taking account the increasing number of activities around the implementation of this agenda. These exemplars aim to inspire thinking and discussion around a particular project or key issue as well as to provide people with contacts to collaborate as they progress on their journeys to enhance children and young peoples’ opportunities to develop skills for learning, life and work.

The CDN Emporium 2016: Inspiring Ideas will take place 01 to 17 June, offering a fortnight of thought-provoking and practical workshops, seminars and activities at our offices in Scotland and in colleges across Scotland.
This year the CDN Emporium will explore ‘Developing the Workforce’ as a theme, focusing firmly on the current needs and challenges facing colleges.
The Emporium creates opportunities to:

lead and discuss inspiring ideas that shape a transforming workforce development agenda.

The Education Scotland DYW Skills Team have developed a new Self-evaluation guide FINAL along with the HM College Inspection team. This self-evaluation guide has been created for school and college senior managers, practitioners, guidance and support staff to assist quality enhancement as part of the ongoing analysis of partnerships between schools and colleges. It is hoped that this will strengthen working relationships and planning and delivery structures, improve and diversify programmes on offer, and increase recruitment, retention, achievement and progression. This guide may be used for planning with schools and colleges in tandem, or in conjunction with other stakeholders as part of a comprehensive plan. The five sections include challenge questions and identification of strengths and areas for improvement. Each question is referenced against the most relevant quality indicators of: HGIOS4, Quality Framework for the External Review of Scotland’s Colleges and Developing the Young Workforce Recommendations.
