Inaugural RSE Unlocking Ambition Enterprise Fellows are announced⤴

Twenty of Scotland’s most talented entrepreneurs eager to start up their business right here in Scotland are announced as the inaugural RSE Unlocking Ambition Enterprise Fellows. They are the employers of tomorrow, innovating for the future and complete the 40 entrepreneurs participating in the Unlocking Ambition Challenge as announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The start-ups range from a novel online education platform for children to support financial learning to creating new breeds of commercially farmed insects; from an innovative food business following the FODMAP diet to a cost-effective eco-brick; and from a new support learning management system for the aviation industry to a resource to aid the visualisation of venue information to improve the delivery of events. There are four social enterprises included in the 20 start-ups and 30% of these new Enterprise Fellows are female.

The appeal and interest in this fresh new programme caught the imagination of a wide range of entrepreneurs. The nationalities of the talented participants leading these start-ups include Azerbaijani, British, Indian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Nigerian as well as Scottish! And aiding the development of the 20 new RSE Unlocking Ambition Enterprise Fellows are 13 of Scotland’s Scottish Universities and Research Institutes who provide visiting status to each.

Scotland is ambitious and committed to establishing itself as a diverse world-leading entrepreneurial nation. The Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellowship (RSE), as Scotland’s National Academy encourages the advancement of learning and useful knowledge through projects and activities such as the prestigious Enterprise Fellowship programme aimed specifically at enabling the development of new, high-growth businesses based in Scotland.

To support future opportunities, The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) is delighted to be working with the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise (SE) and Scotland’s entrepreneurial ecosystem in the inaugural Unlocking Ambition Challenge to support entrepreneurs who want to start and scale their businesses in Scotland.

The £4m Unlocking Ambition Challenge is delivered by key stakeholders from Scotland’s entrepreneurial ecosystem as part of the Scotland CAN DO initiative, backed by the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon. The programme provides funding support to 40 highly ambitious entrepreneurs chosen for their individual potential, the quality of their ideas and the contribution their companies can make to the Scottish economy and wider society.

There are two programmes within the Unlocking Ambition Challenge: both are focused on supporting innovative, purpose-driven entrepreneurs. The RSE Enterprise Fellowship programme is for 20 earlier stage start-ups who will be hosted by a number of Scottish Universities or Research Institutes led by the RSE and the SE programme – a scaling development programme for 20 successful SMEs is led by Scottish Enterprise.

By coming together, the 40 participants will benefit from mentorship from established and successful entrepreneurs and business advisors, networking opportunities and peer-to-peer support.

The 20 RSE Unlocking Ambition Enterprise Fellows will benefit from a tailored business development training delivered to the highest standard of international excellence and significant business development budget enabling them to bring their propositions to market.

Mr Hepburn, Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills said:

“Applications for Unlocking Ambition opened in March this year and only three months later, with the addition of the RSE Enterprise Fellowship entrants, this first cohort is ready to begin its journey.

“This demonstrates the appetite for growth and the innovation potential of businesses in, or wishing to locate in, Scotland.  It is particularly pleasing to note this international talent that Unlocking Ambition is attracting and retaining.

“They are showing faith in our vision for the Scottish economy and we will ensure that through Scotland CAN DO our business support and the business environment is the best in the world.”

The 20 entrepreneurial start-ups participating in the RSE Unlocking Ambition Enterprise Fellowship programme and completing the Unlocking Ambition Challenge (alphabetic order) are:

Rachael Bews – ALICAS: Ali’s Coats and Shoes Ltd. Hosted by CREATE, the Centre for Enterprise and Innovation at Inverness College UHI part of the University of the Highlands and Islands. ALICAS is a survivor-led social venture that gifts bespoke clothing parcels to women who have fled abusive relationships.

Roy Bitrus – RAB-Microfludics. Hosted by the Oil and Gas Technology Centre/University of Aberdeen. Commercialising cutting-edge microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology to deliver onsite, real-time, testing and analysis of lubricating oil for businesses with heavy machinery.

Colin Campbell – Unlocking Potential. Hosted by the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Innovations. A cloud-based Impact Evaluation and Management tool that measures social capital to demonstrate delivery against stated targets and outcomes.

Alan Clark – Take Your Marks. Hosted by Abertay University. An online resource for schools to improve attainment and health & wellbeing of students through regular in-class physical activity.

Thomas Farrugia – Beta-Bugs Ltd. Hosted by the Roslin Innovation Centre. Creating new breeds of commercially farmed insects for the alternative protein industry and bio economy.

Pooja Jain – CogniHealth. Hosted by the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Innovations. CogniHealth aims to transform the way both family and professional carers look after people with dementia (PwD) at home. Their first product, CogniCare, is a healthcare app for carers of PwD, enabling personalised dementia care.

Joan Kangro – Kingdom. Hosted by the University of Glasgow. An autonomous gardening robot that can mow the lawn, remove weeds and collect leaves from your garden.

Tadas Labudis – Prodsight. Hosted by the University of Glasgow. Prodsight helps companies make well-informed product decisions by extracting actionable insights about customers’ needs from support tickets.

Barry Leaper – LiberEat. Hosted by the University of Aberdeen. The LiberEat app makes life easier for people with dietary restrictions, while also improving businesses’ sales and healthcare patient outcomes.

Lauren Leisk – Fodilicious Ltd. Hosted by Queen Margaret University. An innovative food business providing the UK’s first freshly prepared ‘free from’ meal options which follow the low FODMAP diet for digestive health and wellbeing.

Claudio Marturano – Nubis Aviation Training Ltd. Hosted by the Open University in Scotland Nubis Aviation Training has developed an online, continuous-support Learning Management System (LMS) aimed at aviation maintenance personnel for regulatory training.

Louise McHattie – KENOTEQ Ltd. Hosted by Heriot-Watt University. Kenoteq will supply the most advanced and cost-effective bricks the building industry has seen in a generation…using waste materials.

Ross McLeod – Specialist Safety Systems Ltd. Hosted by the Oil and Gas Technology Centre/University of Aberdeen. Specialist Safety Systems is a company that’s been engineered to transform the crane & lifting industry, through intelligent work-platforms.

Cavid Nadirov – GETGUIDED Ltd. Hosted by the University of Edinburgh & Edinburgh Innovations. An innovative platform helping travel businesses, such as hotels, travel agencies and event organisers, find and book local, unique tours and experiences provided by verified guides & suppliers or instantly book local guides for custom tours.

Elijah Nazarzadeh – AcuWave. Hosted by the University of Glasgow. A novel acoustic pulmonary drug-delivery technology that enables precision therapeutics for established drugs and advanced nanomedicines for gene therapy.

Lorna Paul – Giraffe Healthcare. Hosted by Glasgow Caledonian University. A Community Interest Company providing a state-of-the-art online platform for the remote delivery of high quality, personalised healthcare programmes backed by expert advice and support.

David Phin – Paragon Inspection. Hosted by the Oil and Gas Technology Centre/Robert Gordon University. An innovative inspection system to reduce hydrocarbon leaks from small bore tubing in the oil and gas industry.

Anna Renouf – Orrin Equestrian. Hosted by CREATE, the Centre for Enterprise and Innovation at Inverness College UHI part of the University of the Highlands and Islands.  Pioneering new saddle produced from composite materials that offers superior fit and improvements for horse welfare.

Stephen Roe – Stageport. Hosted by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Stageport provides unlimited access to venues, and the tools to plan and visualise events at any location.

Usman Yaseen – Sonik Pocket. Hosted by the University of Strathclyde. Sonik Pocket is an innovative, online education and shopping platform for children that supports financial learning, in a fun, safe and secure environment.

Boosting young people’s employability through LifeSkills⤴

‘LifeSkills created with Barclays’ is a free employability programme for 11-24 year olds and we’re thrilled that, to date, we’ve had 5 million young people participate in the programme. Now we’re excited to announce two new initiatives that celebrate the achievements of young people, schools and colleges in their bids to boost career prospects.

What is LifeSkills?
Back in 2013, LifeSkills was launched to support educators address the growing skills gap amongst their students and face the youth employability challenge head on. Developed with educators across all four nations, LifeSkills strives to support educators develop young people’s employability skills through free, curriculum linked education content.
Through lesson plans, interactive challenges, videos and quick-fire activities, as well as student work placements opportunities and sending Barclays volunteers into the classroom, we want to help to bring  career education to life.

What does LifeSkills deliver?                                                                                    LifeSkills covers a range of different themes that all support young people get the skills they need to move forward from education into the 21st century workplace, including building resilience, learning to be a problem solving pro, becoming an expert communicator and mastering money management.

LifeSkills and the Career Education Standard
To make teachers’ lives as easy as possible, we ensure our content is aligned with the Career Education Standard’s goal of improving ‘young people’s ability to make informed decisions about future pathways’.   In particular, throughout the resources we look at how we can fulfil the following criteria highlighted within the standard:

• engage young people in meaningful discussion about their skills development
• develop their understanding of the responsibilities and duties placed on employers and employees
• facilitate young people’s learning and their ability to engage with a rapidly developing landscape of work/career and learning opportunities

Greg Leighton, an employability support officer in Glasgow and member of the LifeSkills Educator Advisory Council is passionate about the programme, stating ‘It’s no longer just about qualifications. Young people now, more than ever, need softer skills like confidence and communication, alongside relevant experience, to meet the demands of a changing world of work. LifeSkills resources are comprehensive, easy to use and essential in helping young people to realise and fulfil their true potential.’
But it doesn’t end there. Now we’re taking the programme to the next level.

LifeSkills Champions
Launched in October, LifeSkills Champions offers young people the chance to gain valuable recognition for boosting their own and their peers’ employability skills through LifeSkills. If you work in education, you can nominate anyone aged 14-19 to become a LifeSkills Champion.
Once nominated, young people are tasked with delivering a series of LifeSkills sessions to their peers. From CV writing to interview preparation, networking best practice and more, the sessions cover core skills and competencies that are essential to employers. What’s more, they’ll be supported along the way with a toolkit, packed full of tips and videos from LifeSkills Ambassadors. When their designated activities have been completed and approved, they’ll receive a ‘LifeSkills created with Barclays’ digital badge to help demonstrate to prospective employers that they’ve got the skills to take on new challenges, act as a leader and motivate others.

The LifeSkills Award
Going hand in hand with LifeSkills Champions is the LifeSkills Award. This recognises schools and colleges which are going above and beyond to support their students to gain the skills they need for better futures using LifeSkills. We know there are so many schools and colleges out there doing amazing work to set their students up for success by embedding LifeSkills across their whole institution, and we want to make sure they’re getting the recognition they deserve. Successful applicants will receive certification that demonstrates their institution’s commitment to championing young people’s employability locally and nationally, as well as to regulators and parents.

Developing the Young Workforce : Marketplace

I am seconded to Scottish Government to support the Developing the Young Workforce strategy and the regional employer groups that have been set up to deliver employer engagement with young people in education to help their awareness and access to the world of work.

This is the second time I have had this privilege having been involved in Determined to Succeed and people have asked me what is different this time round. I think one area for change is how we use digital technology to communicate employer offers and support to education.

Last year, the Edinburgh, East and Mid-Lothian DYW group launched Marketplace which is a digital platform for employers to offer schools insight, inspiration and awareness activities and events. The National DYW group led by Rob Woodward of STV has since agreed to the roll-out of Marketplace as the recommended tool for DYW groups to use.

Skills Development Scotland in collaboration with Scottish Government, Education Scotland, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayrshire, and North East DYW groups have led the development of Marketplace.

The benefits of Marketplace are to make it easy for employers to communicate an offer to education and, for teachers it sits on My World of Work website which will make it easier to search for opportunities. The system allows teachers to book employer offers and will be open for young people to be able to see what’s on offer too

In addition, the Founders4schools service is available in Marketplace and this links teachers with entrepreneurial employers who wish to offer learning opportunities to schools. So the platform allows you to see what’s already available and to build your own event with employer support if you require this.

St Mary’s Primary School (North Ayrshire): Work-based learning opportunities through community partnerships⤴

St Mary’s Primary School, finalist at the Scottish Education Awards 2017, has developed a systematic approach to career education weaving work-based learning opportunities across the curriculum.  This includes an assisted work placement programme for all P7 students with local business across a wide range of sectors from science and technology, IT and the hospitality sector.    The programme is now running in its second year.   Headteacher Mary Hume says:  “We have built excellent relationships within the town evidenced by the fact that they are willing to work with our pupils again this year but moreover, we have been able to diversify and offer more choice to our pupils.”

One of their partnerships allows pupils to shadow interpreters at Conentrix (IBM) dealing with complex issues of cyber security.  The partnership also extents to staff visiting the school to supporting the 1+2 languages agenda at St Mary’s.

This initiative sits within the wider career education programme the school offers all learners across the curriculum.  Parents and employers are co-designing and delivering exciting project work that enhances leanrers’s skills for learning, life and work.

Maisondieu Primary School (Angus): Opening horizons and challenging stereotypes through career education⤴

Rising to the challenge set by the Career Education Standard 3-18, Maisondieu Primary School has woven career education and advice into their curriculum from early years to P7.   Working oin partnerhsup with parents and the wider community the school harnesses a wider range of resources and support including SDS’s online materials to develop skills and career aspirations for the 21 century.  A working group, led by a parent-teacher partnership and local community partners, helped to promote the schools career education .  Many activities including a ‘World of Work Mobile Unit’ and two whole school careers events were arranged. These enable children and young people to actively engage with variety of employers to support learning and understand the skills required for  their future pathways.

The impact of this approach is far-reaching:

  • Pupils are able to connect their learning with the world of work, carefully selected representatives from local employers help challenge stereotypes and provide a more realistic picture of jobs and careers available for young people in the future and the skills required to access these.
  • It also strengthened partnership links with stakeholders in the community.
  • It allowed pupils and staff to reflect upon the entitlements and expectations set out within the Career Education Standard 3-18

IET: Engineering Work Experience for All⤴

The  Institute for Engineering and Technology (ITE) has launched a campaign entitled ‘Engineering Work Experience for All’  in order to raise awareness of the value of high quality, practical work placements in helping to develop future engineers with the practical skills they need for the workplace.

According to the IET 2016 Skills and Demand in Industry report, 62 per cent of engineering employers say graduates don’t have the right skills for today’s workplace, while 68 per cent are concerned that the education system will struggle to keep up with the skills required for technological change. To address these growing concerns over skills gaps in the engineering workforce, particularly among graduates and school leavers, 91 per cent of companies agreed that more employers need to provide work experience for those in education or training.

The campaign

In response to these statistics, the IET has launched the Engineering Work Experience for All campaign to champion the need for more employers and universities to collaborate to offer quality work experience to engineering students. The campaign is designed to rally employers, universities, Government and students to make a range of different, quality work experience opportunities more widespread.

DYW Interesting Practice- Ellon Academy: ‘Work-related Learning’ offer enhance pupils’ employability skills⤴

In response to the new Work Placements Standard, Ellon Academy has introduce their ‘Work-related Learning’ model  in collaboration with local business and employers offered as an option choice for all pupils in the senior phase.   Leaners are given the opportunity to   participate in  internship-style work placements one day a week from August to Easter and are able to select from a wide range of  sectors including journalism, education, hospitality, performing arts, event management child care.  Supplementary lessons in school allow participants to reflect on their   learning experience, enhance newly developed skills and at the same time gain a National Progression Award in Enterprise and Employability at level 4 or 5.

Scottish Textiles Skills Partnership: ‘Materials World’ – a resource for secondary schools⤴

Material World is a resource that has been developed for secondary schools, designed to use textiles as a medium for delivering learning outcomes related to the STEM, Circular Economy & Sustainability and Developing the Young Workforce agendas. The resource uses case studies of Scottish textile, leather and fashion companies to provide young people with a deeper understanding of the processes used, and products made in Scotland today. Themed activities are linked to the case studies to deepen their learning and skills analysis sheets link the learning through activities, to jobs in the sector.

The evaluation of a pilot with four Scottish Schools as well as resources, case studies and toolkits are contained within the  Materials World resource pilot report ES

Aberdeenshire Council helps to prepare young people for the world of work⤴

Pupils from Ellon Academy took part in the launch a school employer partnership initiative designed to help prepare young people for the world of work.

As part of Aberdeenshire Council’s internal Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Strategy, the local authority has partnered with Ellon Academy in a first for the area.

Through the partnership, the Council intends to provide support to the academy in several ways. These include continuing to attend careers events, assisting curriculum delivery by giving specialist talks and providing employability skills training and internships to young people.

Ellon Academy Deputy Head Teacher, Kim Hall, said: “The key aim of this partnership is to support young people in Ellon Academy to gain the skills for learning, life and work they require for post school education and employment destinations.  We are delighted to have Aberdeenshire Council as our committed, ‘Flagship’ business partner to work with us jointly to achieve this aim.”

Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Human Resources, Laura Simpson, said: “As a large employer, we are well positioned to help give young people inspiration, knowledge and skills as they transition through school and into employment.

“We offer a huge diversity of jobs and careers, and this partnership presents a great opportunity to promote Aberdeenshire Council to young people in the local area.

The Council’s Director of Business Services, Ritchie Johnson, said: “The Council is working on attracting more young people to work for it, placing itself as an employer of choice in the north-east, and this partnership is a significant milestone in that process.”
