SLF 2017: DYW seminars⤴

Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017⤴

The programme for EIFF Youth Hub 2017 is now live!

Now in its fourth year, EIFF Youth Hub returns for four days packed with free practical filmmaking workshops, masterclasses and events for 15-25 year-olds. Whether you want to gain insights into animation or screenwriting, learn from experienced filmmakers about acting, cinematography or short filmmaking, or if you just want to network and step into a career in film – Youth Hub has something for everyone from 23 to 26 of June.

Events at Youth Hub are free with a Youth Hub Pass which costs £5 and gives access to all Youth Hub events as well as £5 discounted tickets to most EIFF films.

Western Isles Council – extensive apprenticeship offer⤴

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and partners will publish an extensive list of over 40 apprenticeships which will see posts created from the Butt to Barra, across a wide range of sectors and departments including:

The Comhairle will be hosting community meetings throughout the Western Isles to provide full information on the above apprentices. Dates have yet to be confirmed but these meetings will take place the week commencing Monday 5th June 2017 and further details will be publicised closer to the time.

Cllr Angus McCormack, Chairman of Education, Sport and Children’s Services, said:       “This is a fantastic opportunity for people from the Butt to Barra to earn whilst they learn, and very importantly – to do so in their own areas. This ties in very well indeed to the Comhairle’s aims to reverse depopulation, provide our people with the opportunity to remain in their communities, whilst also contributing to the economy. I would encourage those who speak Gaelic and also those who have a particular interest in land management and crofting to keep express their interest in these apprenticeships. I would reiterate once again that the apprenticeships are open to anyone, not just young people, and anyone who feels that they may be interested should register at www.myjobscotland.gov.uk and setup an alert for the job category “Modern Apprenticeships/Trainee” where they will receive notifications by e-mail as soon as the Comhairle’s Apprenticeships posts go live.

SDS news: National STEM event at South Lanarkshire Council⤴

Frank Devine, SDS Careers Adviser at Uddingston Grammar School, tells us more about a recent event supporting teachers to encourage young people to consider STEM careers.  ‘We understand the influential role teachers play in young people’s careers choices.

Part of our role as Scotland’s national careers service is to ensure we work closely with, and support teachers to, offer the support young people need to make informed career decisions.  That was the main driver behind our recent Career Gap event.   Working with South Lanarkshire Council’s Developing the Young Workforce co-ordinator as well as a group of local teachers, our aim was to give teachers across the area help to support pupils to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

More than 50 attended, from 18 local area secondary schools.

By tapping in to the wealth of expertise and knowledge on offer across SDS, we were able to offer a full day programme looking at the subject from a variety of angles – equalities, career management skills and employer need.

Our National Training Programmes team supported the day to raise awareness of the ways unconscious bias could be stopping some pupils, especially young women, progressing in STEM.

They brought in Improving Gender Balance Scotland project officer Charlotte Govan to give some cold hard numbers on subject uptake, and the impact that has further down on employment, as well as practical ways of combatting unconscious bias.

Our employer team helped to put us in touch with employers and apprentices to tell teachers their stories, offer ideas on support that could be helpful to pupils now, and talk about what it’s really like to work in STEM industries. BT, BAE and Scotland Energy and Utility Skills all attended on the day.

My colleague Donna Robertson and I were able to give more information on career management skills, career long professional learning modules we offer, the support resources available to teachers via My World of Work and more detail on SDS careers services in schools.

All the teachers who attended took away packs with more information on the support SDS offers, and we’ll be creating further lesson plans and resources to share with all the teachers who attended.

This wasn’t just a chance at CPD for teachers, but offered us the chance to develop the skills of young people from the area too. Recent graduate Stephen Benedetti lent his sound engineer skills for the podium and round table mics, and sixth year Uddingston pupil Adam McKibben snapped pictures for us on the day which were used on the SDS website and social media.

Partnership working was key to the success of the event, as it is to all the work SDS is involved in.

Donna and I are really proud of the strength of the partnerships we have here in South Lanarkshire.  We work closely with all members of the school staff, including subject teachers, pastoral care teachers and the senior management team, the local authority and with partner organisations working within education and with our customers across the area.

It’s those strong partnerships that allow us to stage not just major one-off events like this, but to ensure day-to-day we are offering the best service we can to our customers.

Our recent Education Scotland review shows our hard work is paying off.

Scottish Textiles Skills Partnership: ‘Materials World’ – a resource for secondary schools⤴

Material World is a resource that has been developed for secondary schools, designed to use textiles as a medium for delivering learning outcomes related to the STEM, Circular Economy & Sustainability and Developing the Young Workforce agendas. The resource uses case studies of Scottish textile, leather and fashion companies to provide young people with a deeper understanding of the processes used, and products made in Scotland today. Themed activities are linked to the case studies to deepen their learning and skills analysis sheets link the learning through activities, to jobs in the sector.

The evaluation of a pilot with four Scottish Schools as well as resources, case studies and toolkits are contained within the  Materials World resource pilot report ES

DYW Interesting Practice – Sanderson High School: Tailored learning pathways to meet the needs of all⤴

The whole school approach to DYW offers learners at Sanderson High School in South Lanarkshire a wide variety of career related and work-based learning opportunities that aims to inspire the exploration of future pathways.  The learning experiences within and beyond the curriculum not only provide learners with a significantly enhanced skills portfolio, tracked and referenced through profiling, but also ensure meaningful connections with the world of work and accreditation in the senior phase. As part of this approach the school created the subject ‘Education for Work’ which now forms part of the core curriculum at all levels. 

The school has also developed a Position Statement which states that “all young people will learn about the world of work; and where appropriate all young people will participate in suitable work experience; and all young people will have a clearly defined and individualised pathway from S1-S6, resulting in sustainable, meaningful post-school destinations.”

Staff use the entitlements from Career Education Standard 3-18 (CES) to ensure these aims are put into practice and audit the skills the young people are developing. For example, staff in each subject area match their curriculum and teaching and learning approaches to the relevant entitlements from the CES and the appropriate skills . The school has a good range of work placements for young people in the senior phase, which provides them with an excellent experience of the world of work and which links well to the curriculum.

There is also a close partnership with Calderglen High School on the implementation of DYW with learners taking up  volunteering opportunities at Sanderson HS.   Video clip: Volunteering at Sanderson HS

Aberdeenshire Council helps to prepare young people for the world of work⤴

Pupils from Ellon Academy took part in the launch a school employer partnership initiative designed to help prepare young people for the world of work.

As part of Aberdeenshire Council’s internal Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Strategy, the local authority has partnered with Ellon Academy in a first for the area.

Through the partnership, the Council intends to provide support to the academy in several ways. These include continuing to attend careers events, assisting curriculum delivery by giving specialist talks and providing employability skills training and internships to young people.

Ellon Academy Deputy Head Teacher, Kim Hall, said: “The key aim of this partnership is to support young people in Ellon Academy to gain the skills for learning, life and work they require for post school education and employment destinations.  We are delighted to have Aberdeenshire Council as our committed, ‘Flagship’ business partner to work with us jointly to achieve this aim.”

Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Human Resources, Laura Simpson, said: “As a large employer, we are well positioned to help give young people inspiration, knowledge and skills as they transition through school and into employment.

“We offer a huge diversity of jobs and careers, and this partnership presents a great opportunity to promote Aberdeenshire Council to young people in the local area.

The Council’s Director of Business Services, Ritchie Johnson, said: “The Council is working on attracting more young people to work for it, placing itself as an employer of choice in the north-east, and this partnership is a significant milestone in that process.”

Its focus is Creativity, Enterprise and Employability so we hope you will find this guide particularly useful in your work. It is has been produced by the NPFS in partnership with Skills Development Scotland with input from a range of other partners, including NCLN representatives and Young Enterprise Scotland.

It recognises the significant and increasing link between future employability and well developed creativity skills in young people. In their 2016 report ‘The Future of Jobs’, the World Economic Forum highlighted anticipated changes in employability skills and suggested that by 2020 over one third of the skills considered important in today’s workforce will have changed. Notably, creativity will have become one of the top three skills needed to deal with the avalanche of new products, new technologies and new ways of working. https://www.weforum.org/reports/the-future-of-jobs . As you know, the focus on creativity and employability is also reflected in Quality Indicator 3.3 in the latest (2016) version of the school self-evaluation and improvement guide How Good is our School?

Angus Works: Extended work placements for senior phase pupils⤴

Angus Works is an extended work eplacements programme, open to all S4-S6 pupils across Angus. The programme has been developed by the Education Business Liaison Offers in collaboration with the DYW strategic group and employers across the authority and is implemented by the council’s Skills for Work coordinators.  The programme  runs for 22 weeks (August – April) and forms part of the pupils timetable.  Each young person is engaged one-day a week within an identified role within Angus Council, supported by a mentor.

Angus Works is an important way to help all young people to enhance their learning and develop as confident individuals, successful learners, responsible citizens and effective contributors. It will provide them with skills they will use throughout their lives in learning, life and work.  It is key to the programme that young people are involved in “real-life” meaningful tasks and projects during their placement, supporting skills development and giving them an accurate insight into that role/career.

All young people engaged with the programme have the opportunity to undertake an accredited Personal Development Unit, delivered and supported by Angus Council’s Skills Team.

Underpinning principles:

  • Angus Council’s commitment to developing the young workforce.
  • Providing meaningful opportunities for work experience.
  • Preparing our young people for their future in our community.

Erasmus+ Act for Careers Conference, 15th June 2017⤴

We would like to invite you to attend the Glasgow City Council Education Services Erasmus+ Act for Careers Conference on Thursday June 15th  2017, 09.30 – 16.00 at, The Prince’s Trust Wolfson Centre, Cumbrae House, 15 Carlton Ct, Glasgow G5 9JP.

Glasgow City Council and the City of Nuremberg have been collaborating since 2014 under the Erasmus+ European education programme to improving support for young people’s employability skills in their transition from school to work.  The project entitled ‘Act for Careers’ has involved, schools, colleges, employment support teams and businesses to examine and learn from best practice in this field to inform and enhance local/national policy and practice at key transition points in young people’s development of their employability skills.  On March 9th 2017, City of Nuremberg delivered a conference on their findings and collaboration with the City of Glasgow. 

The conference will offer a range of workshops and plenary sessions on learning about the German education system, the benefits of:  international engagement; funded European job shadowing opportunities; enhanced practice on employability skills from school to work and on supporting young people from a refugee background into employment.  Speakers will include the Depute Mayor of Nuremberg, Executive Director of Education Glasgow City Council and project participants from both Glasgow and Nuremberg, including young people from Lochend Community High School.
